Jake Ray (Tito)

AD

Jake Ray (full name: John Jacob Ray, born October 15, 1975 – died October 19, 2015) was a well-known radio producer and personality closely associated with the legendary Houston morning show Stevens & Pruett.

Career Highlights

  • KLOL “Rock 101” (Houston): Jake joined the Stevens & Pruett show as a producer in the mid-to-late 1990s. He was a key behind-the-scenes player, often contributing on-air with characters and bits. He was affectionately known on the show as “Tito” or “Smallberries”.
  • He was part of the wild, edgy, and often controversial humor that defined the Stevens & Pruett era (alongside producers like Tom “Tubby” Lawler).
  • Jake appeared in group photos from station events, including the “Dawgs on Hogs” motorcycle-themed gatherings, where he was typically seen in the brown jacket among the crew.

Later CareerAfter his time in Houston, Jake continued in radio:

  • He worked as a host/producer in other markets, including Seattle and Atlanta.
  • He later moved to New York, where he produced for HOT 97 (Emmis Radio / WQHT), one of the biggest hip-hop stations in the country.
  • In his final years, he worked as a radio consultant through his site morningproduceroncall.com.

Personal Note: Jake passed away in 2015 at age 40 from complications related to cystic fibrosis (CF), a condition he had battled for years. Many in the Houston radio community remembered him fondly as a talented, funny, and dedicated “player” on one of the most iconic morning shows in Texas radio history. He was a fan favorite during the Stevens & Pruett heyday and contributed to the chaotic, larger-than-life energy that made KLOL “Rock 101” legendary in the 1990s and early 2000s.
